I've recently stumbled across your blog and I love the topic! I also think the alphabet cards are a terrific concept. My only ideas were the Yooks and the Zooks from Dr. Suess' The Butter Battle Book (but I don't know if those would be well-known enough). For F, I loved the children's book The Story of Ferdinand and think Ferdinand is an endearing character. Others that crossed my mind were Frog and Toad, Sal (Blueberries for Sal), and Mrs. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus books. Hope those are helpful! Good luck.

And what about "Zlateh the Goat," the Newbery Honor book by I.B. Singer with illustrations by Maurice Sendak, for Z?

Fabulous idea! What a wonderful way to incorporate children's book characters into literacy in the classroom! It would be great to make ABC Book with my kids with all the characters we have read or heard about throughout the year as a culminating activity:) Thanks.

Before you suggested Captain Underpants, I was thinking the Ugly Duckling might work for the letter U. And the Velveteen Rabbit would be another option for V. I'm still stuck on Q; maybe the whole Quimby family from the Ramona books?
It seems like there should be a Zack in a picture book, but I can't think of one off of the top of my head. Can you? It's a good thing Marika suggested the Yooks and the Zooks for Y and Z because I can't think of much else.

This is a delightful idea. I would add Henry Huggins, Carl the Dog, Waldo, Tashi, Ralph S. Mouse, Fly Guy, McDuff, Mercy Watson, Paddington, Hairy Maclary, Zelda (from Zelda and Ivy), Toot, Puddle, and Molly Moon.
And, though these are characters from books for older readers, I think Charlie Bone, Artemis Fowl, Septimus Heap, Emily Windsnap, Anne of Green Gables belong here too.
That's fun! I'd suggest Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Ozma of Oz and other Oz characters. There are books such as Who's Who in Children's Books that could give you a lot more ideas....

love the idea! but maybe to figure out what to use, it would help to have all picture book characters or all chapter book characters.
I thought of characters from Dr. Seuss's ABC book because we read it often:

I love this idea. It makes me wish I was still teaching elementary school. But it would also be fun for my little girl when she gets older.
Anyways. The one character that I think can't be over looked is Mrs.Piggle-Wiggle. Sorry she doesn't help with the letter 'Q' quandry.

I hope you made your flashcards. I had a similar idea, but for a banner for a child's room. Found a book you might try for a "Z" character: Zilly: A Modern-Day Fable by Kelly Parks Snider (Hardcover - January 15, 2012)

Thank you so much for sharing your list. This is exactly what I was looking for for my preschool class this year as I'm going with a storybook character theme. Some additions I've made to your list are: Elmer the elephant, Franklin, Jubal (I ♡ Jubal's Wish - the illustrations are incredible), Li'l Critter, Pete the Cat, Quickie (look for Donald Driver's books), Rainbow Fish, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Winnie-the-Pooh.
